The Portrait - Frau Hettlage Textile & Fibre Art

Frau Hettlage, a tailor and communication designer, combines both professions to create large-format quilts. The composition is (de-)constructivist, the process analog and physical, the materials natural (linen, cotton, wool). The three layers of the quilt are connected by hand: slowly stitched, sashiko inspired. With her work, Frau Hettlage sees herself in the tradition of “Feminist Artists” who consciously use feminine methods to express themselves. She finds inspiration for her motifs, for example, on the tiled sidewalks along the promenade in Essaouira, Morocco, or through the analysis of traditional patchwork techniques. Through Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique she found her way to “Slow Stitching”, thus setting a counterpoint to Western acceleration society. She is aware that the boundaries between appreciation and cultural appropriation are fluid.
